A commonly uncounted era of the Phanerozoic eon, The Scatozoic Era is the lesser known age of the geologic time periods. Nestled between the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras, this embarrassing period of geologic history goes unmentioned in most history books. The reason is because of the nature of this period; faeces. Faeces had their moment in the sun, so to say, in this era. There are many theories about why the Scatozoic Era came to be, but the bottom line is that for this brief period of about 5 million years the earth was up to its neck in it.

Figure 1.

Geological evidence of this era has been found on every corner of the earth, it shows that for a very short period of time there was a thin layer of faeces covering the entire Earth (fig. 1). The most commonly accepted explanation is that as recently evolved large reptiles rapidly over-populated Pangea the sophisticated micro-organisms which help decompose the excrement of today were at that time unsophisticated and outnumbered.

This resulted in an overabundance of fecal matter which buried the lush plant life and resulted in the starvation of many dinosaurs. Over time the micro-organisms caught up and the Mesozoic era was right on track. The end of the Scatozic saw the beginning of the tectonic and climatic activity for which the Mesozoic is known. Some believe this age is actually the cause for the changes of the Mesozoic.

Although this era was a mere brief pause while the Earth experienced a “floater”, it is a significant era in history which should not be ignored.
